This past Friday, UPB put on their recurring event, Funny Freakin’ Friday, a time for students to come and see a comedy show in TDU. The event has hosted a variety of different acts, including comedians who were brought in to perform from outside of Virginia. This time around, UPB invited some of JMU’s student–run comedy teams, Maddy Night Live and New and Improv.’d, to perform in an hour-long show, giving each team 30 minutes of stage time to do with as they pleased.
“UPB did a great job of letting us have freedom while helping out with advertising,” said Maddy Night Live and New and Improv.’d member Jake Smolsky.
UPB had Maddy Night Live do a social media takeover on their Instagram a few hours before the show, giving MNL the opportunity to advertise themselves however they wanted to. Having the flexibility to brand however they liked gave the team a chance to use a bigger social media platform to show the JMU community who they are.
“I wish the comedy teams did more Funny Freakin’ Fridays! It gives us a connection to a different audience because of it being from UPB,” said MNL member Gabby Katz.
Having a chance to show an audience who might not normally come to their shows what they are all about helps these comedy teams grow. UPB is doing a great job giving students more opportunities to use their creative voices around campus.
It was an exciting opportunity for the comedy teams to be able to have a venue for not only a different audience, but a larger audience. Both teams were able to give themselves exposure and those in attendance were able to see the different ways that comedy can be performed.
“It’s great to be able to show this audience all that comedy has to offer, whether it’s improv or sketch comedy,” said Allison Mohar, a member of MNL.
The night was a great way to showcase these student organizations. UPB brought a new support to these comedy teams by allowing them the opportunity to perform.
