Majors: SMAD and Psychology
Sloane Gartner is a junior SMAD and Psychology double major and a member of TAD’s Photo Team. When Sloane first arrived at JMU, she wanted to be involved with something photography related and found out about TAD during her search. She says it’s a perfect, “win-win” situation, affording her the opportunity to take pictures, as well as gain some job experience. She also enjoys taking pictures when she’s off the clock. Photography is more than just a job for her. When she’s not taking pictures Sloane can be found playing field hockey with her JMU clubmates. She played the sport all throughout her high school career and wanted to continue when she got to college.
In the past, Sloane has had some interesting run-ins with celebrities. A couple of years ago her mom almost ran over Bono from the band U2 while driving in D.C. “How awful would that be?” She said about the incident. “Every Irishman would be after us.”
This year, Sloane wants to learn more about the professional aspects of TAD, like working with a client in mind. Balancing both the client’s expectations with her own creative instincts is an important part of her work for TAD.
After graduating from JMU, Sloane will take time off to work before heading to graduate school. Her goal is to learn more about her SMAD concentration, interactive design.
She believes her two majors will help her to create appealing projects in the future. “I felt that if I was going to create something people would like I need to know…what sparks people’s interests,” she says. She doesn’t have a plan for what type of work she’d like to do post-graduation, but figures she’ll find opportunities while finishing her courses at JMU.
