What exactly is Make Your Mark on Madison, or MYMOM?
The Fall MYMOM experience is a 10-week leadership development program for all undergraduate students. The goal of the program is for every participant to obtain a sense of belonging, to become more self-aware, and to begin to recognize their innate ability for self-authorship. In short, it emphasizes every student’s ability to make a difference on campus.
How are we adapting to the challenges of COVID-19?
Like the rest of JMU, we are taking precautions to ensure the health and safety of each of our stakeholders. Our goal is to preserve the elements that make MYMOM the wonderful experience that our alum say it is, while prioritizing wellness. After careful consideration we have designed a hybrid program for the Fall of 2020 which will allow for individuals to decide where they feel most comfortable. Please note, we have a variety of back-up plans, and we will be monitoring numbers and conditions as the semester progresses.
What does “hybrid” mean for MYMOM?
We will have councils which are either entirely in-person or online. Participants will choose when they apply whether they prefer in-person or online. Each council, regardless of their meeting format, will be led by 2 Leadership Counselors (LCs). In-person councils will be capped at 8 participants. Online councils will have about 12 participants.
All MYMOM affiliated events will operate according to JMU’s published guidelines (hyperlink). This means masks are mandatory, attendance will be tracked, and participants with COVID-19 symptoms will not be allowed to participate in-person.
What will Monday nights look like?
After attendance is taken and students’ LiveSafe app is checked, Monday nights will begin! A presentation by an external presenter will introduce leadership topics like personal values, diversity, and difficult conversations. If participants are online, they will tune into the live presentation which will be streamed to our Facebook page. After the presentation, we will break out into council time (both in-person and online) which will consist of discussions and activities led by the council’s two LCs.
What is the commitment to be a participant?
- The following Monday nights are typical program nights that you will be expected to attend (in person or virtually): 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 10/19, 10/30, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16.
