Over the years, JMU has developed numerous traditions to welcome back students from summer break. One of the most iconic is Student Org Night, a showcase of all of the organizations that JMU has to offer. The campus houses over 400 organizations and new clubs are being recognized every year. Whether you’re a freshman or a senior, Student Org Night has something for everyone.
This semester, Student Org Night had a change in scenery. The event was moved from its original location on Hillside Field into the Convocation Center. From the time that the doors for the event opened at 6 p.m. to when they closed at 8, droves of students filled the stadium. The event was overflowing with energy as excited murmurs filled the air.
Veterans of the event can attest that an indoor location really changes the experience. Senior Social Work and Statistics double major Rachel Hosig was a fan of the new location. She said,
“I really like that it’s in Convo because there’s a lot more space than last year.” The amount of space and the protection from the elements made the decision to move the event to Convo a popular one.
Natalia Johansen, a junior Intelligence Analysis and Statistics double major and president of the Statistics club, thinks that Student Org Night is a great way to bring students together. She said, “It’s a great place to get to know everybody and meet all the clubs!”
This event is one of the only times of the year that all the best clubs that JMU has to offer appear in the same room. To some, that sight may be a little overwhelming. For sophomore Psychology major Courtney West, this was her first time attending the event. She was blown away by the sheer number of clubs that attended.
“It’s cool how there are so many things to choose from,” she said. “There’s seriously something for everyone!”
If you missed this event, don’t fret! Student Org Night will return in the spring on January 23, 2020, in Festival Student and Conference Center. If you didn’t make it to this Org Night, you can still join any of the amazing clubs that JMU has to offer.
