Comedy For a Cause

The laughter heard coming from TDU on Saturday, December 1st did more than just make the pipes rattle. Organizers from the Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha sorority who hosted the event found a way to turn that laughter into real change in the Harrisonburg community by making it a fundraiser for the Harrisonburg Boys and Girls Club.

Before the show began, guests helped themselves to food and drink donated by local restaurants and watched a short video about La Casita, the Boys and Girls Club Outpost that the show benefited. After that, it was time to bring out the laughs and introduce comedian Erick Rivera.

Rivera, who has made appearances on the Tonight Show and Telemundo, worked the college crowd, giving relationship advice and telling stories from his childhood. “My birthday is a week and a half after Christmas, Rivera said. I was 8 years old, opened a box and there was just a right sneaker. I asked my dad ‘What am I supposed to do with this?’ He said, ‘Well, maybe if you're good, then on your birthday…’”

“I honestly loved the Latino dad jokes,” says Junior SMAD major Andrew Geraci. He was not alone. The crowd exploded every time Rivera impersonated his family. Rivera wasn’t afraid to touch on sensitive topics either. “It’s funny because I purposefully have things I say to get a reaction, but also to ease you into it,” says Rivera.

The show succeeded in entertaining guests and also bringing attention to areas of need within the Harrisonburg community. Natale Morales, Vice President of SIA, attended the show and was happy that the show benefited such a good cause. “Helping people in other countries is good,” says Morales, “but sometimes we don’t look at the local Harrisonburg community, and there’s a lot you can do.”
