Funktastic First Concert at The University Park

“I knew this concert was going to be amazing,” said exhilarated Senior Education major Emily Watson. Funk and rock music emanated from the newly finished University Park last Thursday at 7pm. Sponsored by UPB and UREC, it was the first concert to be held at the park. It featured the Harrisonburg native band Midnight Spaghetti & The Chocolate G-Strings accompanied by band Steal the Prize as openers.

Steal the Prize, from Lynchburg, drew in the crowd with their psychedelic rock sound. “They’re a great group and I expect great things from them,” said Midnight Spaghetti & The Chocolate G-Strings' lead guitarist Mickey Glago. The bands formed a relationship at Spaghettifest, a music festival that takes place every September, usually at memorable locations in the Shenandoah Valley such as the landmark Natural Chimneys. Midnight Spaghetti has invited Steal the Prize to perform at the festival for the past two years.

Midnight Spaghetti brought a unique sound to the stage. A combination of jazz, rap, and stellar funk, the band was started 10 years ago while many of the members were JMU students, giving it a strong connection to JMU. This connection is reinforced by Mickey’s presence in the band. Mickey is a JMU professor in Music Industry, and the band's last remaining original member. “We were upperclassmen so a lot of us lived off campus. We enjoyed the atmosphere...it was a big propeller to our career,” said Mickey.

The band interacted with the crowd, teasing them about using cell phones and encouraging the dancers. “The essence of the Midnight Spaghetti party is to get down, dance, and feel comfortable with who you are and what you do,” explained Mickey. It was clear from their excitement that the band enjoyed the concert as much as, if not more than, the crowd did. “Music is a great release and, for me at least, it’s given me a great sense of family outside of my family because of the camaraderie that forms with the people you perform with” said Mickey.
