Graphic Design Major
Few graphic designers are lucky enough to have their passion for graphic design collide with a second passion of their own. Fortunately for Xander Houff, as a small group leader and graphics team leader for Intervarsity, a national campus ministry, his two passions share the same space. Intervarsity is a national organization and campus ministry that allows college students to worship and engage in positive community activities together. Xander attributes becoming graphics team leader with showing him a different perspective on design and gaining the skills that come with a managerial position.
“Being the graphics team leader is mostly about figuring out what the other designers excel at and designating tasks that best display their skills.”
Aside from participating and working for Intervarsity, Xander also does freelance and commission work. These projects often include business cards, large poster design, print design, and brochures. As a designer, he is particularly interested in typography, which he discovered after taking multiple design-oriented classes in high school. Xander began to develop an affinity for design by tinkering with simple editing tools in Photoshop and other programs.
Xander is excited to work at TAD because it’s an opportunity for him to be surrounded by likeminded creative colleagues who also bring a different approach to graphic design and others skills such as web design and photography.
Fun Fact: In addition to discovering his passion early, Xander also visited all 50 states before he graduated high school. His father wanted Xander and his siblings get a true sense of the world and experience other cultures. Xander says that his experience while traveling have shaped who he is today.
