Graphic Design and Creative Advertising Major
“You play the banjo?” Talk about a conversation starter. Senior Jay Spiegel originally bought the instrument as a joke, but now enjoys playing it back home. Similarly, the one graphic design class he took in high school started out as an experiment, and now Jay finds himself a Graphic Design major at JMU.
Considering his interest also extends to the commercial side of graphic design, Jay has since added a SMAD major with a concentration in Integrated Advertising and Corporate Communication. He chose to double major in order to fuel his desire to accomplish more as well as create an effective combination of two different, yet complimenting fields.
In the future Jay hopes to be working at his dream job as a creative director for an ad agency. As the current creative director for the Madison chapter of the American Advertising Federation, JMU’s sole advertising club, he already seems to be well on his way. Jay also serves on the executive board for Madithon, a fundraising dance marathon in its third year at JMU.
Having grown up in the outskirts of Richmond, Jay decided he’d prefer living in the mountains as opposed to the city, and no other college tour could top that first one at JMU. Besides playing the banjo, Jay also plays the guitar; he even performed in a band in high school.
Fun fact: Jay attended a wedding over the summer that took place in Frank Sinatra’s house in Palm Springs, California.
