The Dolley Leadership Awards are an annual recognition banquet celebrating the achievements of student organizations and outstanding individuals at James Madison University! Below is a list of all the awards presented at the Dolleys. Nominations are currently closed.  Please check back spring 2015 for more information.

ORGANIZATION WIDE AWARDS

Emerging Organization

This award acknowledges a recognized organization in good standing that has recently (within this academic year) gained recognition or re-instatement and has positively contributed to the JMU community. This organization should have exemplified significant efforts in building collaborative relationships with current organizations and meet a need at JMU not met by another organization. Questions to be answered:

  • What need did this club meet at JMU that was not met by another organization?
  • How was this particular organization successful in impacting the JMU community?
  • What efforts were made to build collaborative relations with other organizations?

Outstanding Student Organization

There are two categories for this award: front-end budgeted groups and non-front-end budgeted groups. The award acknowledges a recognized organization in good standing that has a positive influence on the JMU community through exceptional programming, leadership, goal attainment, and the development of positive visions for the future. Questions to be answered:

  • What specific events has this organization held in this year that has influenced the JMU community?
  • What sets this organization apart on campus?
  • What intentional efforts have been made to enhance leadership skills within the organization?
  • Give an example of a goal the organization had for the year and how it was fulfilled.
  • What is a positive vision this organization hopes to accomplish in the future?

Outstanding Program / Event

There are two categories for this award: front-end budgeted groups and non-front-end budgeted groups. This award acknowledges a program or an event on campus that has made a positive impact on JMU and/or the Harrisonburg communities. The program or event must have been sponsored/run by at least one student organization in good standing. Questions to be answered:

  • What was the purpose of this program?
  • How was this particular program successful in impacting the JMU and/or surrounding community?
  • How did the program affect people? (Include # in attendance, and if appropriate, other organization/agencies who collaborated to make successful)
  • How did the implementation of this program relate to the organization mission?

The Rose Award for Alcohol-Alternative Programming


This award honors a recognized organization in good standing that demonstrated, through programmatic efforts, a continuing commitment to engaging students in an environment that provides an alternative to alcohol for students to engage in social and entertaining events. Questions to be answered:

  • What was the purpose of this program?
  • Describe the efforts made for this to be an alcohol-alternative program.
  • Why do you believe this program should receive this award?
 


INDIVIDUAL AWARDS

Emerging Leader

This award recognizes one male and one female student who have demonstrated exceptional potential, maturity, leadership skills, passion, and dedication to JMU and/or Harrisonburg as a first or second year student. This student should also have demonstrated an ability to adequately balance their academic pursuits and co-curricular involvements by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Each recipient will receive an academic scholarship applied to their tuition the following year. Nominees must be returning as an undergraduate to JMU for the next academic year. Questions to be answered:

  • Describe this individual’s potential to create positive change at JMU and the greater community.
  • What distinguishes this particular student from other young leaders on this campus?
  • How does the student balance their academic life with student leadership?
  • Describe how this student has shown a passion or dedication to JMU.
 

The Carrier Award for Outstanding Personal Pursuit of Leadership Development


This student leader should have outstanding skills in organization, motivation, delegation, and communication. This award is given to one male and one female student. This student should also have demonstrated an ability to adequately balance their academic pursuits and co-curricular involvements by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Questions to be answered:

  • What leadership skills do they exemplify? Please give an example of a time when they utilized these leadership skills.
  • Give an example of a time this individual actively pursued personal leadership development.
  • What distinguishes this particular student from other leaders on this campus?
  • How does the student balance their academic life with student leadership?

The Taylor Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to a Student Organization

This student leader should have outstanding skills in organization, motivation, delegation, and communication. This award is given to one male and one female student. This student should also have demonstrated an ability to adequately balance their academic pursuits and co-curricular involvements by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Questions to be answered:

  • Describe this individual’s contributions to their organization.
  • How does this individual motivate others within their organization?
  • What distinguishes this particular student from other leaders on this campus?
  • How does the student balance their academic life with student leadership?

Pay It Forward Award

This award recognizes a JMU student who has embodied the Pay It Forward mission at JMU. By giving selflessly of themselves and making service to others a priority, they have role modeled the Pay It Forward mission, and illustrated that true leadership is service to others. Questions to be answered:

  • In what ways has this student made service a priority in his/her life?
  • How does this student Pay It Forward?
  • How does this student impact their organization, community, or agency through service to others?

Dukes Pride Award

This award recognizes one student who has demonstrated their commitment to the JMU community through their display of JMU spirit and pride. This student should also have demonstrated an ability to adequately balance their academic pursuits and co-curricular involvements by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Nominees must be returning as an undergraduate to JMU for the next academic year. Questions to be answered:

  • Describe how this student has shown their spirit and passion for JMU.
  • What sets this particular student apart from other students when it comes to showing their school pride?
  • How does the student balance their academic life with their other commitments, such as co-curricular involvements, athletics, etc?

The Pepsi Award for Substance Abuse Awareness Award

This awards a JMU student who has positively impacted individuals, organizations, or agencies within the JMU and/or Harrisonburg communities by making substance abuse awareness a priority and by acting as a positive role model. Two recipients will be selected for this award. Questions to be answered:

  • How does this student impact their organization, community, or agency through substance abuse awareness?
  • In what ways has this student made substance abuse awareness a priority in his/her life?
  • How does this student serve as a role model?
** This award is not limited to this academic year, the student’s entire history at JMU is taken into consideration.


FACULTY / STAFF AWARDS

The Hall Outstanding Faculty/Staff Achievement Award

This award recognizes a faculty/staff member who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to student learning outside of the classroom, who has given of their time apart from office hours and job requirements, and has had a significant influence on the lives of students. Questions to be answered:

  • What accomplishment(s) and/or involvement(s) has this faculty/staff member participated in outside of the classroom setting?
  • Describe the influence this person has had on the lives of students.
  • How does this individual demonstrate a commitment to student success?

The Bluestone Award for Outstanding Advising

This award recognizes a JMU faculty/staff advisor of a recognized organization in good standing who has had a positive influence on an organization by providing support, approachability, and encouragement of effective communication within the organization. Questions to be answered:

  • What roles/duties does this adviser perform for your organization? (Include the amount of time and energy dedicated to the organization)
  • How does this advisor promote the interests of the organization?
  • Please identify the ways in which this advisor has exceeded the organization’s expectations. Focus on what makes this person exceptional.
  • How has this advisor influenced the organization to be more effective at meeting its mission?
