CLASS OF 2022
Hey Dukes! My name is Lisa Ryan, and I am running to be your Class of 2022 President!
I recently graduated from Potomac Falls High School in Sterling, VA and traveled here to pursue a degree in business management. My activities in high school helped me learn and enhance my leadership skills while I served as Freshmen Class Secretary, Sophomore Class President, Student Council Association Community Outreach Liaison, and Student Council Association President. As SCA President my senior year, I worked as the school board representative for my student body at monthly school board meetings. I also founded a chapter of the national freshman transition program, Link Crew, with three other students my sophomore year that is still growing and developing today.
One thing I learned from these roles is that “leadership is 80% showing up and doing the work.” Although leadership sometimes means stapling papers and organizing data late at night, that’s what makes a leadership team successful. As Class President, I will take on the sometimes tedious behind the scenes work to make our year memorable and springboard us into our next years at JMU. I’m excited to lead the Class Council with this mentality and to serve the students of JMU’s Class of 2022. JMU’s initiative of “Being the Change” has motivated me to run for Student Government Association, so that I can help the Class of 2022 shape JMU and leave a positive legacy behind. As Class President, I commit to:
Continu-ING the Tradition: I will ensure that JMU traditions for the freshmen class are upheld and celebrated. I’m excited to learn more about what JMU already loves and get the Class of 2022 excited about what’s in store for the next four years.
Be-ING the Change: As a leader on the Class Council, I will work to hear the students and take action for change. I will create a system for students to voice their opinions directly to the Class Council so that new programs and activities can be started at JMU.
Look-ING Forward: I hope to start new traditions for the Class of 2022 that will ensure we remember our years at JMU forever, and that JMU remembers our class forever. I want to start events like Cocoa & Cram, where students can study for finals with some free hot chocolate and snacks, as well as offer class wide competitions and events. I would like to host charity events and positive initiatives that college students can be easily involved with while having fun.
I’m so excited for a great first year at JMU, vote Lisa Ryan on September 18th and go Dukes!
I am running on a platform with an open door policy. As a Freshman, I am not well acquainted with the happenings of JMU, but I want to listen to my peers, hear their advice, and help tackle issues that come up as the year progresses.
VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
As Vice President I want to make a more inclusive JMU within the freshman class. I want to unify the campus and make everyone feel like they have a place here.
ENGAGE: Get your classmates involved!
EXPAND: Expand your horizons
EXCEL: Excel and spread the cheer
SECRETARY OF EVENTS CANDIDATES
I’m making it my goal to make campus as much like a family environment as I can.
SECRETARY OF COMMUNICATIONS CANDIDATE
Hey fellow Dukes! My name is Samantha Lowe, and I am running to serve as Secretary of Communication for the Class of 2022. I went to South Lakes High School in Reston, Virginia, and am currently an Honors student pursuing a degree in Psychology here at JMU.
I have had plenty of experience leading large groups and planning events, as I was a member of my high school’s leadership program and served on the Executive Council, was National Honor Society President, and was a member of the Virginia Student Council’s Association Advisory Committee. I planned a state-wide leadership conference, as well as numerous school and community events to include Homecoming and leadership workshops for local elementary school students. I am organized, passionate, open-minded, and hardworking, all of which I believe are traits that would serve you well. In addition to planning the traditional class events such as the Quad Lighting and Class Ring events, I have some goals I would propose if elected.
First, I would like to organize at least one large event designed to bring our class together and create a sense of unity. Three ideas I have include a fall-fest, “stress less” event, and/or a community service project. The fall-fest would be a fun weekend event with fall-themed activities, food, games, and live music. Another idea I have is to hold an all-day event where students can engage in stress relieving activities (e.g., crafts, dogs, yoga) the week before finals, as I know we will all be very stressed. Lastly, I would work to organize a class-wide community service project (such as hosting a 5k race to support a charity). This would allow us to work with an organization to promote positive change in the community while bringing our class together.
I am SO excited to be a Duke and can’t wait to make our first year here at JMU absolutely unforgettable. Remember to vote Samantha Lowe for Secretary of Communication on September 18th! Go Dukes!!
RESIDENCE-AREA SENATOR CANDIDATE
Candidate for Village Area Senator
As the Village-Area Senator I promise to uphold the standards of this fine institution and to hold my word accountable to all who ask for help. I will do my very best to run our community smoothly and to improve all that I can. Go Dukes!
CLASS OF 2020 SECRETARY OF EVENTS CANDIDATE
If elected I promise to complete the responsibilities of my position to the best of my abilities.
