Having a car is not a necessity for being able to live off campus. There are services which can assist with having a car for short trips or getting a ride with other JMU students, as well as other means of transportation.
Zipcar is a nationally recognized, 24/7 car sharing service. It allows students to rent cars at a daily or hourly rate, and Zipcars are located on JMU’s campus at the JMU Bookstore near the Godwin Transit Center and at the Festival Conference and Student Center Parking Lot. For more information, visit the following link.
JMU Zimride also offers a ridesharing service. With a JMU e-ID, students can use this program to offer or request rides for commutes, road trips, and popular events. For more information, you can follow this link.
Bike Share by Baas Bikes
Baas Bikes offers a new form of on demand bike sharing that is fast, convenient, and sustainable without the traditional set-up of docking stations. Instead, users locate shared bikes within the geo-fence through the Baas Bikes mobile app, which allows users to reserve, unlock, and return the bike using Bluetooth capability. To rent a bike or if you have any questions about Baas Bikes, call (415)-483-5733 or click here.
Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation- Buses
The Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (HDPT) and JMU work together to ensure students have a safe and reliable method of transportation for getting to and from campus, around campus, and to the City of Harrisonburg. All JMU students and employees ride for free on HDPT Transit buses. When boarding buses on campus or at the off campus apartments, it is not necessary to display your JACard; however, when boarding buses in the city, the driver may request that you present your JACard in lieu of paying a fare.
Many of the off campus housing providers that partner with Off-Campus Life offer a Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation Bus Stop directly on their site. All buses are wheelchair accessible and equipped with bicycle racks that can hold up to two bikes at a time.
When classes are in session, HDPT buses serving the off campus apartments typically start operations around 7:30am and operate until almost 11:00pm. Full HDPT transit bus schedule information can be found at the following locations:
-All current bus schedules are posted by HDPT at www.hdpt.com
-Paper booklets containing schedules can be found on any HDPT transit bus and at primary locations on campus, (i.e. Madison Union and Festival Conference and Student Center).
-JMU’s “Bus Finder” app can be used to find the most efficient route between destinations. The service can locate the closest bus stop to you along with the option to select specific stops. Users can also search for buses departing at the current time or future times.
-NextBus is a real time bus arrival app that shows the ETA of the transit buses at any bus stop, accounting for any delays that the bus may be experiencing.
