The mission of Off Campus Life is rooted in a desire to promote your success both as a student and a member of the Harrisonburg community. In light of recent media coverage concerning off campus parties, we would like to encourage you to reflect on the impact your choices have on your personal wellness and on the community in which you live. How are your decisions impacting your personal safety and the safety of those around you? How do your actions impact the community? What are the implications for your academic career? How about your personal relationships? How do these choices impact you today? Tomorrow? A year from now?
Your time at JMU will encompass some of the most amazing years of your life. In building memories you will cherish for a lifetime, it is important to do so in a manner that fosters the safety and wellness of you and your fellow Dukes. But making decisions that facilitate your success and wellness does not happen by accident. It takes an intentional effort to become informed and to make responsible decisions. Information on personal safety, hosting parties responsibly and safely, and being a responsible citizen in your community can be found on the Off Campus Life website.
Upon accepting admission to James Madison University you also made the decision to become part of the greater Harrisonburg community. It’s a community of surprising cultural diversity that takes pride in its reputation for friendliness. It is our hope that the manner in which we conduct ourselves will make the residents of Harrisonburg as proud to have JMU a part of their community as we are proud to be Dukes. When you live off campus, your neighbors aren’t always going to be other students. They are also going to be families with young children, senior citizens, and professionals. Though we may have different interests and priorities, we must never forget that our lives share a common bond, that our actions impact one another. Take a moment and put yourself in the shoes of your neighbor and consider how your actions might differ if you had their best interests at heart.
Over the coming months you will be introduced to a new campus initiative called the Madison Collaborative. This exciting program is designed to prepare students to be enlightened citizens who apply ethical reasoning in their personal, professional, and civic lives. We understand that living on your own comes with a great sense of freedom and personal autonomy, but we ask you to consider the ethical dimensions that coincide with your personal responsibility as a representative of James Madison University in Harrisonburg. To that end, we encourage you to broaden your perspective on applying ethical reasoning by visiting the Madison Collaborative website. It contains a wealth of information that will transform the way you perceive and interact with your world.
Being a part of the JMU Nation is a special place that comes with special responsibilities. We at Off Campus Life look forward to working with you to grow the great traditions that embody James Madison University.
