“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.  But when you add to that a literate tongue and pen, then you have something very special.”

Nelson Mandela

Fraternities and sororities were born out of academic circles – groups of men and women committed to enlightening conversations about a variety of topics.  Today’s organizations are even more committed to scholastic achievement, and provide for members a variety of different academic support systems.  Each council and all organizations have minimum grade-point average requirements for membership, “buddy systems” for members in the same major, and mandatory study hours.  Ever cognizant of the importance of scholastic success, the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life provides consultation and support to organizations seeking to raise their grades or simply to cement an excellent scholarship programs for members.  What has transpired is a community that consistently achieves a grade-point average that is higher than the all-male/female averages and scholars who affect the world both during and after their time at JMU.
