Chapter History

Founded in 1852, Phi Mu is a women’s organization that provides personal and academic development, service to others, commitment to excellence, and lifelong friendship through a shared tradition. Phi Mu promotes vibrant living, encouraging members to achieve their personal best.

Phi Mu is committed to providing social opportunities, a support network, and academic development to our members. We have a long history of campus involvement and leadership. Since 1852, Phi Mu has chartered more than 230 chapters and has initiated more than 200,000 members. Phi Mu is the second oldest sorority in the nation and we pride ourselves on continuing the tradition of excellence that began over 150 years ago.

Phi Mu’s Creed is the center of the Phi Mu experience and is the guide to developing the “whole woman” in each of our members. The creed focuses on the three principles of Love, Honor, and Truth. As an organization, Phi Mu works to instill these principles in each member by developing their confidence and self esteem. In addition Phi Mu provides four values to our membership: Character Building, Leadership Development, Community Service, and Sisterhood. Phi Mu is committed to providing a sorority experience that is relevant and meets the needs of today’s collegiate member. Phi Mu encourages its members to be the best that they can be and to make a positive difference throughout their communities.

The Gamma Theta Chapter of Phi Mu was chartered in 1959 and recolonized on October 8, 2010. Phi Mu’s national philanthropy is Children’s Miracle Network. http://jmu.phimu.org/ 1986, Phi Mu has raised more than $8.5 million dollars for over 170 children’s hospitals nationwide. Locally, the Gamma Theta Chapter will support the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital. Phi Mu was also the first sorority to establish a national philanthropy day to promote community service among its members. Each year in October, Phi Mus across the country to engage in service activities in their communities.
