Theta Chi Fraternity was originally founded on April 10, 1856 in a dormitory called the Old South Barracks of Norwich University, Norwich Vermont (currently located in Northfield, Vermont). The Eta Kappa Chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity was founded at James Madison University on April 8, 1972. The Brothers of the Eta Kappa chapter have continued to uphold the ideals of Theta Chi Fraternity set forth by its founding fathers more than 150 years ago. The Brothers have also continued to improve upon the quality of Brothers and the essence of Greek Life itself. The Brothers of this chapter find common bonds in ideals and philosophies of life dedicated to better men creating a better world. An openly diverse group of gentlemen, the Brothers of Theta Chi Fraternity at JMU study under a vast array of majors and minors offered by the University, and also participate in countless organizations and clubs. The Maxim of Theta Chi reads: ‘¬Alma mater first, Theta Chi for alma mater.’® The Brothers of this Fraternity understand that it cannot exist without an alma mater (JMU), and the betterment of the University is of the utmost interest to our survival and well being, as well as the quality of life and education for all students at JMU. Brothers of Theta Chi Fraternity can be easily found as OPA’s, FROG’s, Hall Directors, Student Ambassadors, and members of JMU’s SGA. There is a lineage of Brothers from this chapter of Theta Chi Fraternity that have proudly served and continue to serve our country’s armed forces. Brothers of the Eta Kappa chapter can be found working for the Department of Defense in our nation’s capitol all the way to studying filmmaking among the elite at the University of Southern California’s graduate program. Theta Chi Fraternity prides itself on academic excellence, gentlemanly behavior and esteem, and most importantly on being able to bring unique, strong individuals together through common goals of worth.
