Wilson Concert Series: Gloriana

Ready, set, wait! Sophomore Josh Mizez stood in line for three hours in order to have the chance to participate in a “meet and greet” with Gloriana before their performance at Wilson Hall at 9:00pm on Thursday, September 20th. The wait was well worth it for Josh, who got to meet the band and take a photo with them. Josh has been a big fan for the past two years. He was not the only one ecstatic about the opportunity. Senior Stacey Walker, who won two spots for the “meet and greet” through finished lyrics on University Program Board’s Facebook page, was also excited. She noted her admiration of the band, “I’ve always loved country music. I started listening to them a while back, and I fell in love!”

UPB’s Public Relation’s Director, Liz Rea was happy to be part of the hosting team for the band, “They’ve been really great,” she said. “We took them back for the ‘meet and great,’ and they were so nice and friendly. They [Gloriana] asked if we wanted a picture with them, and thanked us for having them. We were like, ‘No thank you! You did us the favor.”

Opening for Gloriana was JMU alumni Canaan Smith, a country acoustic one-man-show. He thrilled the audience by adding ‘JMU girls’ into the lyrics of his songs and reminiscing about the good old days as a JMU student. Canaan just recently signed a deal with Mercury records and toured with Sugarland this past summer. His hit “We Got Us” has made the top 100 in country music charts.

Gloriana’s stage presence was electric, complete with lights strung around the drum sets and giant wooden blocks frequently climbed during pivotal solo moments. Band members Tom Gossin, Mike Gossin, and Rachel Reinert have been working together since 2008, when the Gloriana first began. Although the band is fairly new, they have climbed billboard charts with their songs “(Kissed You) Goodnight”, “Turn My World Around”, and “Can’t Shake You.” A sign of the success of this show is the fact that bystanders could not tell who was having a better time—the band or their audience.
