Dux Center LEAD Team Consultant

The Dux Center (Latin word for “leadership”; pronounced “dukes”), is JMU’s leadership resource center for students. Our mission is to be the premier source for information and assistance to students wanting to develop & improve their leadership abilities. We offer programs, workshops, conferences, books, videos, and equipment resources, as well as consulting assistance and partnerships in any way possible to further the development of skills, abilities, and knowledge related to leadership.

The LEAD Team (Leadership Education and Development) is a small group of hired student employees who help create, develop, and deliver many of those programs and resources listed above. Individual members of the team, LEAD Team Consultants, are paid for working 8-12 hours/week in the Dux Center. Some of those hours are maintained on a regular schedule in the office and some are fulfilled delivering workshops, seminars, and other training experiences in the evenings and on the weekends. No work is ever required on Sundays.

What are the specific job responsibilities? LEAD Team members will be expected to:

  • Complete the LEAD Team 40-hour presenter/facilitator certification training. (Training time is paid.)
  • Develop content expertise in at least 3 specific areas.
  • Deliver presentations, workshops, seminars, and other learning experiences to help other students develop their leadership skills and expertise.
  • Act as a consultant in the personalized leadership development consultation program.
  • Assist in the ongoing development and evolution of the Dux Center, including refining existing programs, developing new programs, and eliminating ineffective programs.
  • Carry out evaluations of training sessions delivered, completing summary reports, and providing recommendations for future sessions.
  • Attend staff development meetings weekly.
  • Meet weekly in one-on-one meetings with the director of the center.
  • Maintain a minimum of 8 (and up to 12) consistent, formal office hours in the center.
  • Fulfill a work contract from January – December.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned.

What’s in it for you? LEAD Team Consultants will gain practical, employment-related experience in a highly energetic, fun environment. Students who are hired can expect to:

  • Become qualified as certified training & development presenters.
  • Deliver 3-5 high quality, experiential learning oriented workshops, or seminars each semester.
  • Participate as a member of the LEAD Team in the process of identifying appropriate areas for the development of new programs, creating those programs, and delivering them to JMU students.
  • Learn effective, high-end strategies and techniques for delivering presentations, dealing with difficult participants, and engaging others in effective leadership learning environments.
  • Gain an understanding of leadership development theory & a variety of leadership theories.
  • Become content experts in several current, cutting-edge leadership principles and practices.
  • Become part of a fun, enthusiastic, close-knit group of other students and professional staff, working collaboratively, with respect and regard for each other and the work we do.

What’s the application process? Students wanting to be considered for candidacy to fill one of the limited available spots will be required to:

  • Complete an application at www.jmu.edu/dux (link to the application is below) and submit a 90-second video before 11:59 pm on Friday, Nov. 7th.

  • If your application is accepted you will be expected to the participate in the “Super Saturday Presentation Round.” This will be held 10:00 am – 3:00 pm on Saturday, Nov. 15th.
    • You will deliver a 20-minute workshop on a leadership topic of your choice.
      • Use any methods, approaches, or techniques, to showcase your skill & knowledge.
      • A computer, with projector and sound capability will be provided, including a remote control device for use with PowerPoint or Keynote.
      • The resources of the Dux Center are available for you to use to prepare.
  • You will be assigned either a morning time slot, or an afternoon time slot and are required to bring 2 other students (friends, roommates, any other JMU student) with you.
  • Both you and the students you bring will be required to attend during the entire half day in which your presentation will be given.
  • Lunch will be provided for you and the students you bring.
    • You are not required, but may choose, to attend the presentations given by the other candidates during the half day in which you are not presenting.
    • If you are selected as a finalist, following the presentation round, you will be asked to participate in two interviews between Nov. 18th – 20th.
      • One interview will be with current LEAD Team student members in a group setting.
      • The second interview will be with the Director of the Dux Center.
      • Final decisions will be announced via email no later than 3:00 pm, Friday, November 21st.

What if I’m hired, then what? All members of the LEAD Team, both those newly hired and those returning, are expected to participate in key events, as listed below:

  • OPTIONAL: December 1st, End-of-Semester Celebration with Kijiji, dinner & recognition for Kijiji participants and LEAD Team members. New hires will be introduced here.
  • All LEAD Team members will be required to attend a 4-day retreat, Jan. 6-9th, prior to school starting.
    • Food & overnight accommodations will be provided at no cost.
    • Newly hired LEAD Team members will complete a majority of the 40-hour certification training during this retreat.
    • Missing any time of this retreat for newly hired LEAD Team members is NOT AN OPTION.
