University Program Board (UPB)—the organization at the core of the many pivotal events at JMU, including the upcoming Juicy J concert and the eminent Late-Night Breakfasts—seeks input from students of all ages, grade, and interests. Though UPB is a student-run organization, it puts on events year-round from small audiences in Taylor Down Under (TDU) and large audiences in the Wilson auditorium.
Next year’s Vice President of Marketing, Alejandra Buitrago says, “Events are really what you make them. We really do value their [students] input.” During each summer, UPB sends surveys to the JMU student body to better understand what artists they would like to see and what events they are particularly attracted to. This year, UPB is trying to customize its survey so that students only have to answer questions applicable to their interests.
Another way to provide your input to UPB is to join. Applying on their website is the first step. Alejandra notes that committee members contribute a lot to the development of events and that there are plenty of perks to being involved.
Alejandra, a junior Media, Arts and Design major with a concentration in Digital Video and Cinema, has high hopes for incorporating other organizations and the student body in event creation. She thinks that UPB “Town Hall”-style sessions open to students and news-style “Weekly UPB Updates” are on the horizon.
Under UPB’s website there is a suggestions form that allows anyone to submit their comments to the organization. Don’t forget, UPB hosts committees that focus on different aspects of student events from multimedia and interactions promotion to special events.
