As another fall rolls around, it’s time to show your JMU spirit and celebrate Homecoming week from November 2-8! While things may look different this year, the JMU Alumni Association has planned for an exciting week of COVID-safe activities that will keep energy high while encouraging social distancing.
Monday kicks off the festivities with Fight Song T-shirt day, a campus-wide celebration where everyone wears their iconic upside-down fight song tee! On top of that, there will be tie-dye stations at Hillside Field and Festival Lawn. But this event has already reached registration capacity, so be sure to register to the other events while you have the chance.
Beginning Tuesday, make sure to participate in a JMU-themed scavenger hunt! The scavenger hunt runs from Tuesday to Thursday and allows Dukes to explore new places at a distance. There are two different options: one for people on or near campus and one for Dukes living anywhere! This scavenger hunt is accessed through the app Scavify, so checkout the alumni website for more registration info.
Wednesday, make sure to tune into the Zoom presentation “B(l)ack in the Days” put on by the Black Alumni Chapter! African American alumni will share their experiences on campus from the 70s all the way to today. The discussion will illustrate where JMU excels and what improvements can be made for inclusion.
Thursday is Purple-Out Day, where Dukes across campus will dawn a purple Homecoming shirt! Be sure to pick up your Purple-Out t-shirt from one of the many distribution sites across campus. Stop by SSC, Warner Commons, Festival, or ISAT between 11am and 1pm to claim your free shirt!
Friday has a special fun run: The Duke Dog Dash! This event allows Dukes around the world to compete in the same fun run race virtually! Participants will log their distances with the collective goal of 1908 miles (a nod to JMU’s founding year!). All proceeds will go to the Madison for Keeps Fund, which provides financial aid and scholarships to students who need the funding to remain enrolled. Bonus: every participant will receive a t-shirt and a race bib. Make sure to register!
On top of these events, the Alumni Association has also arranged for number of virtual conversations about diversity and equity with speakers from the Black Alumni Chapter, the Lavender Alumni Chapter, and many more! These events are on Zoom and also require registration.
To register for all of these awesome events, head over to the JMU Alumni Association Homecoming Page and follow them on social media @JMUAlumni on Facebook and Twitter and @JMUAlumniAssoc on Instagram.
